OpenAI reportedly developing smart speaker, glasses, recorder, and AI pin

OpenAI is reported to have engaged Luxshare and Goertek, two major Apple assemblers, to supply components for these devices. The first products could debut in late 2026 or early 2027, with Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, previously suggesting a “family of devices” born from the Ive partnership.

OpenAI may be preparing a lineup of consumer devices in collaboration with Jony Ive, Apple’s former design chief. According to The Information, one of the prototypes resembles a smart speaker without a screen, while other potential products include smart glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a wearable AI pin.

Altman has described the first product as pocket-sized, context-aware, and screen-free, aligning with the reported smart speaker concept. While he had earlier dismissed glasses as OpenAI’s debut product, sources now indicate eyewear could follow later. Interestingly, an AI pin may also be under consideration, despite Ive’s past criticism of body-worn gadgets.

Apple veterans have increasingly joined OpenAI since the Ive collaboration began. Tang Tan, OpenAI’s chief hardware officer and former Apple design head, has reportedly pitched the startup as a place with less bureaucracy and more creative freedom.
