OpenAI chief Sam Altman is amazed by India’s rapid AI adoption. In a recent post on social media platform X, Altman lauded India’s progress in AI, stating, “What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity — India is outpacing the world.”
The remarks come after OpenAI saw a surge in usage of its tools in India, particularly following the viral popularity of the company’s latest 4o image generation tool, which renders user-submitted photos in the style of Studio Ghibli animations. The feature was introduced as part of a broader product update for ChatGPT last week.

Recently, Reuters confirmed that ChatGPT saw record usage after the rollout of OpenAI’s latest 4o image generation tool, with over 150 million weekly active users and a reported one million users added after the official introduction. Moreover, India has emerged as a major market for OpenAI, with its user base expanding rapidly after this release.
A recent Deloitte report also revealed that India is emerging as a global leader in Agentic AI adoption, with more than 80% of Indian firms “actively exploring the development of autonomous agents, indicating a substantial shift towards Agentic AI." After his visit to India in February, Altman also highlighted the country’s growing importance in the global AI landscape.
Altman also confirmed that India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, with user numbers tripling over the past year. He had also reshared Studio Ghibli versions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside other key global personalities, such as Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron, which were initially posted by MyGov’s official X account this week.
