Mexico threatens to sue Google over changing Gulf of Mexico’s name to Gulf of America

Google recently changed the name of Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America on Google Maps. However, Mexico is not happy with the change. The country is now threatening to take Google to court for the name change following a decree by former US President Trump, according to a report by CNN. Mexico says that the name change is wrong because Trump’s order only applied to US waters. It is not applicable on the entire Gulf, which also includes areas under Mexico and Cuba’s control.

“What Google is doing here is changing the name of the continental shelf of Mexico and Cuba, which has nothing to do with Trump’s decree, which applied only to the US continental shelf.We do not agree with this, and the Foreign Minister has sent a new letter addressing the issue,” President Claudia Sheinbaum told the CNN reporters.

Mexico has agured that Google’s change affects more than just the US and isn’t accurate. While people in the US now see the Gulf of America, users in Mexico still see the Gulf of Mexico, and other countries see both names. In response, Mexico sent Google a letter asking for the name to be corrected. Google replied, confirming the Gulf of Mexico is still visible to Mexican users, but US users will see the Gulf of America.

Mexico is now sending a new letter, saying that Google should only use "Gulf of America" for the US waters and nowhere else. If Google doesn’t make the change, Mexico says it will take legal action. The government is waiting for Google’s response before deciding what to do next.
