India’s growing focus on digital independence has brought renewed attention to MapmyIndia’s Mappls, a homegrown mapping and navigation service. The app recently caught national attention when Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tested it on October 11, showcasing its advanced features such as live traffic updates, 3D junction views, and voice-guided navigation. Developed by New Delhi-based MapmyIndia in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Mappls aims to provide a privacy-respecting, hyperlocal alternative to Google Maps and other foreign navigation platforms.

Mappls integrates ISRO’s satellite imagery and earth observation data to deliver accurate and detailed maps specifically tailored for Indian conditions. This partnership, formalised in 2021, allows MapmyIndia to combine its own mapping technology with ISRO’s indigenous data to enhance coverage, accuracy, and reliability. The result is a product designed to reflect India’s unique geography, infrastructure, and language diversity, while ensuring user data remains securely stored within the country.

The app can be downloaded for free from mappls.com, Google Play Store, or Apple App Store, and it also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for in-car navigation. Once installed, Mappls offers a wide range of practical tools for everyday navigation. Among its most notable features is the 3D Junction View, which visually represents complex intersections and flyovers, helping drivers anticipate lane changes and avoid confusion in congested city areas.

Another key feature is the Live Traffic Intelligence system, which provides real-time data on congestion levels, road speeds, and even signal timers. The app alerts users to nearby speed cameras, diversions, and other road conditions, ensuring safer and more efficient travel. Mappls also includes a Toll Savings Calculator powered by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) data, allowing users to plan routes and estimate costs before starting a trip.
