Instagram appeared to be down for a section of users on Wednesday, according to a surge of complaints posted on social media and outage-tracking sites.
As of around 5.30 pm Pacific time, more than 7,500 users had reported problems with Instagram on Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions based on user submissions. The reports suggested the outage was not widespread across all versions of the service.
Most of the complaints pointed to issues with Instagram’s website rather than its mobile app. Users attempting to access Instagram through a browser said they were met with an error message reading, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”
Screenshots of the error message were widely shared on X, where users complained about being unable to load feeds or log in through the web interface. By contrast, fewer reports referenced problems with the Instagram app, indicating that mobile access may have remained largely unaffected.
Downdetector data showed that the volume of reports began to decline later in the evening, suggesting the issue may have been resolved. However, at the time of writing, Instagram had not issued an official statement explaining what caused the disruption or confirming that service had fully returned to normal.
