Earlier today, Elon Musk’s AI company — xAI — launched its latest and most powerful AI chatbot Grok-3. At the start of the launch/demo event, the xAI team — including Musk — introduced themselves. Igor introduced himself as the head of engineering at AI, followed by Jimmy Baugh, who introduced himself as the lead on research whereas Tony introduced himself as working on the reasoning team.
Next up was Musk who introduced himself as “I am Elon, I don’t do anything,” and quickly followed it up with “I just show up occasionally” much to the delight of his fellow executives.
Why the name Grok?
During the demo event, Musk also explained why the company chose the name Grok. “The term comes from Robert Heinlein’s novel Stranger in a Strange Land. It’s used by a character raised on Mars and means to fully and profoundly understand something.” He emphasised that deep understanding and empathy are key aspects of the chatbot’s capabilities.
Grok-3 is rolling out immediately for Premium+ subscribers on X (formerly Twitter). xAI is also launching a new subscription plan called SuperGrok for users on the Grok mobile app and Grok.com website.
