Big changes could be coming to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. If the latest buzz is true, the platform’s current Direct Messages (DMs) might soon disappear but they won’t be gone for good. Instead, they’re expected to be replaced by a brand-new messaging system called XChat.
The first time people got to know about this was when X software engineer Zach Warunek responded to a user’s question on the platform. When asked if XChat would only replace message requests, Warunek replied, “No, not like request messages but like the whole entire DMs will be gone soon.”
Although no official date has been confirmed, the message was enough to get people talking.
Rumors about XChat have been circulating for a while. Back in January, a popular X account called @xDaily shared a screenshot showing an XChat icon in place of the Messages option on the platform’s sidebar. In February, Elon Musk himself hinted at the change, saying he would stop using his phone number and switch to using X for both texts and calls in the coming months.
More leaks followed in April. A user named @swak_12 shared screenshots of a PIN verification screen for XChat, similar to secure messaging apps like Signal. And just recently, another user @P4mui posted images revealing possible XChat features — including end-to-end encrypted messaging, file transfers, and the ability to unread messages or delete individual messages for everyone.
