Fortnite is once again unavailable on iPhones and iPads after Apple blocked its return to the iOS ecosystem, intensifying the ongoing conflict between Apple and Epic Games.
Why Fortnite disappeared again from iOS
Epic Games had recently attempted to relaunch Fortnite on iOS in the US and European Union, but Apple rejected the submission, effectively preventing its return to both the App Store and Epic’s own game store for iOS. This development was confirmed by the official Fortnite account on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Apple blocked the submission, halting the game’s rollout in both markets. As a result, Fortnite is now inaccessible on iPhones and iPads worldwide.
This move follows a partial legal outcome in 2023 that allowed developers like Epic to direct users to external payment systems. However, Apple maintains tight control over how apps are distributed and monetised on its platforms. According to Epic, the latest block violates the spirit of the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which permits third-party app stores but still requires Apple’s approval for distribution.
The legal fight in the background
The dispute dates back to August 2020, when Epic enabled direct payments in the Fortnite app, bypassing Apple’s in-app purchase system and its 30% commission. Apple responded by removing Fortnite from the App Store, prompting Epic to file an antitrust lawsuit. Though courts granted some relief to Epic by allowing links to external payments, Apple retained control over app distribution, leaving room for friction.
How this affects players
The current block means Fortnite cannot be installed or updated on iOS devices, cutting off millions of players who use iPhones or iPads. This affects not only gameplay access but also disrupts cross-platform play with users on other devices.
Epic also stands to lose mobile revenue, as iOS was previously a major source of in-game purchases. The company has not indicated when or if Fortnite might return to iOS. Until regulatory clarity emerges or the two parties reach a new agreement, Fortnite’s absence from iOS appears set to continue.
