Spotify CEO Daniel Ek

Spotify has announced that Daniel Ek will step down as CEO on January 1, 2026, transitioning into the role of Executive Chairman. Ek, who co-founded the company in 2006, has been the driving force behind turning Spotify into the world’s largest music streaming service.

In his new position, Ek says he will focus on “the long arc”—shaping strategy, managing capital allocation, navigating regulation, and setting the vision for Spotify’s next decade. Meanwhile, Spotify co-presidents Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström will take over day-to-day leadership as co-CEOs, both continuing to report directly to Ek and working alongside the company’s board.

The move comes as Spotify matures into a platform beyond music, investing heavily in podcasts, audiobooks, and new content formats. Ek also hinted at broader ambitions, noting his intention to help foster more “supercompanies” in Europe that tackle major technological and societal challenges.

For Spotify, the leadership shift represents continuity rather than disruption: Ek remains in the picture, while Norström and Söderström—both long-time insiders—are tasked with executing the next phase of growth.
