OpenAI has expanded its new ChatGPT Agent feature to the Mac app, giving desktop users access to one of the most powerful AI upgrades in recent months. First announced last week, Agent combines OpenAI’s Deep Research and Operator systems to let ChatGPT autonomously browse the web, extract data, generate code, and interact with platforms like GitHub and Google Drive.
Now available to Pro, Plus, and Team users, the Mac version of Agent works similarly to the web interface. You can either use the /agent command or click the dedicated Agent button in the app. Once a task is assigned, a visual workflow begins. Users can monitor progress through a reasoning timeline, stepping in anytime to refine or redirect the outcome.
The tool’s capabilities are impressively broad. In demos, ChatGPT Agent handled real-world planning tasks — from organising a destination wedding (outfit suggestions, hotel bookings, sightseeing route, gifts) to business scenarios like preparing slides using data from Google Drive and even interacting with the Terminal. It created charts, maps, spreadsheets, and more — essentially replicating the output of a competent virtual assistant.
In one particularly telling example, Agent was asked to quote a bulk order for 500 custom stickers. It browsed vendor websites, selected products, filled out the form, added items to the cart, and stopped short of confirming the purchase — just like an intern might.
The current usage limits are 400 queries/month for Pro users and 40/month for Plus and Team plans. OpenAI says Enterprise and Edu users will gain access by the end of July.
