The International Olympic Committee (IOC) launched the Olympic AI Agenda in April 2024. Consequently, AI is now going to play a susbtantial role at the Paris Olympic Games. Here’s a brief overview of how AI is going to be implemented in the Paris Olympics.
- Paris Olympics: AI to protect from cyber abuse, create highlights videos
In a website post, IOC President Thomas Bach said that at Paris Olympics, the organisation will use AI to safeguard from cyber abuse, since they expect about half a billion social media posts during the 2024 Olympic Games. He added that AI will also be used to create highlights videos in multiple formats and languages during the Paris Olympics.
2. Paris Olympics will have the first-ever data capture and energy management system
The IOC president said that they are also “using AI to make the Olympic Games more sustainable, through a very sophisticated first-ever data capture and energy management system”.
3. IOC plans to use AI for talent identification
“AI is also opening up new ways for talent identification, and this project will be launched by us globally in 2025 to live up to the commitment we made that AI in sport must be accessible to everybody”, added Bach.
4. The AI-powered monitoring system
An AI-powered monitoring system designed to protect athletes from online abuse will “use AI to monitor hundreds of thousands of social media accounts and flag abusive messages for intervention by the relevant platforms”.
IOC’s Chief Technology Officer Ilario Corna said in the official Olympics website post that athletes will also be able to test drive a new chat service that the IOC is providing in partnership with Intel, on the Athlete365 platform.
5. Behind-the-scenes AI at Paris Olympics: The Digital Twinning tech
As per the IOC, behind-the-scenes applications of AI will allow more efficient planning of future Olympic Games. Using AI, the IOC will monitor the energy consumption at Paris 2024 in real time. The data they capture will be used to plan the next Olympics.
To foresee things like power requirements for future games, camera placements etc., the IOC has partnered with Intel. It would employ digital twinning technology to start planning for the next games.
6. AI to be used by Olympic Broadcasting Services
The Olympic Broadcasting Services will also use AI during Paris Olympics 2024. The IOC has collaborated with Worldwide Olympic Partner Alibaba “to provide a record number of multi-camera replay systems with AI-powered, high-quality reconstruction in the cloud, to create three-dimensional models and mapping of additional viewpoints across 21 sports and disciplines”.
7. Omega and OBS to use AI for faster and more insightful data
At the Paris Olympics 2024, Omega will act as the Official Timekeeper for the 31st time. OBS will partner with Omega to use AI to “deliver faster, more relevant, and insightful data” during the Paris Olympic Games.
“For example, intelligent stroboscopic analysis across diving, athletics and artistic gymnastics will enable viewers to better understand the movements and biomechanics of the athletes. Also, in diving, OBS and OMEGA will use AI to generate enhanced data graphics, providing a new set of data on each athlete’s performance in the air and when entering the water”, says the official Olympics website post.
8. Intel to introduce AI experiences
As the Official AI Platform Partner for the Paris Olympics 2024, Intel will introduce AI experiences like Automatic Highlights Generation.
The Automatic Highlights Generation feature automatically compiles key moments from 14 sports and disciplines into tailored highlights reels.
9. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s role in the opening ceremony
South Korean tech giant Samsung is the official Wireless Communication and Computing Equipment Partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
During the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on the river Seine, each country’s boat will be equipped with the Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones to share on-board footage via an exclusive 5G network powered by Orange, the official mobile network provider of Paris Olympics 2024.
