Apple’s iPhone Theft and Loss protection plan in India, starting at Rs 799, is designed to give users peace of mind if their device is lost or stolen. But it naturally raises a question: can someone hide their phone and file a claim to get a new device? The short answer is that while it might sound possible, Apple has built several safeguards that make this kind of misuse extremely difficult.
First, the plan requires that Find My iPhone be turned on at the time the device is lost and throughout the claims process. This is Apple’s way of tracking the phone. If someone tries to hide their device at home, the system can detect that the phone is still active, online, or hasn’t moved. That alone is a major red flag.
Second, the phone must be marked as lost in the Find My app. Apple monitors location history and activity, so if the phone remains in one place—like the owner’s home—or suddenly appears online during the claims process, it could lead to rejection of the claim. Apple and its insurance partners can also request additional verification, such as proof of theft or a police report, especially if the situation seems suspicious.
Another deterrent is the deductible charged for each incident. Even if someone attempts to fake a claim, they still need to pay a substantial fee to get a replacement. On top of that, the plan only covers two incidents per year, which limits the potential benefit of attempting any fraud.
Finally, once a replacement claim is approved, the old device’s serial number is blacklisted. If the hidden device ever connects to the internet, Apple can detect it, and this could result in the person losing coverage or facing other consequences.
In short, while the idea of hiding your iPhone and claiming a replacement might seem tempting, Apple’s protections make it almost impossible to pull off. The combination of Find My tracking, claim verification, deductibles, and limits on the number of claims ensures that the plan works as intended—for genuine losses or theft.
So, for most users, the Theft and Loss plan is a helpful safety net for unexpected situations, but it is not a loophole for getting a free new iPhone.
