OpenAI has rolled out a new beta update for its ChatGPT app on Android. This update allows users to set ChatGPT as their default digital assistant, a feature that positions it as a direct competitor to Google's Gemini.

According to a report by Android Authority, with the latest version (v1.2025.070 beta), Android users can now invoke ChatGPT using the same buttons and gestures previously reserved for Gemini.

For instance, users can launch ChatGPT by long-pressing the home button, swiping up from the screen's corner, or even long-pressing the power button, depending on their device's settings. This update also introduces a voice mode, enabling users to interact with ChatGPT through natural conversations.

Despite these advancements, ChatGPT still faces some limitations compared to Gemini. It cannot control system settings, manage Google Home devices, or perform tasks like adding calendar entries or controlling music playback on Spotify.
