'Wonderful Ride’: Axiom-4 Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla shares first message after reaching ISS

Shubhanshu Shukla shared how warmly the Expedition-73 crew welcomed him aboard the ISS. He said the crew made him feel like they had opened the doors of their home.

It was a proud moment for India in space on 26 June, as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla floated into the International Space Station (ISS) at 4:05 p.m. IST. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft carrying him and three other astronauts docked successfully with the orbiting laboratory.

Shukla is now the first ISRO astronaut to visit the ISS. He will spend 14 days conducting science experiments and leading several outreach activities during the mission. Speaking from the space station, Shukla described the journey as a “wonderful ride” and expressed his happiness at reaching space.

“A Privilege to See Earth from Here”
Addressing the crew, Shukla said it was a privilege to witness Earth from space. He added that nothing could prepare him for how beautiful the view was. Shukla shared how warmly the Expedition-73 crew welcomed him aboard the ISS. He said the crew made him feel like they had opened the doors of their home.

“Whatever expectations I had were surpassed by the view,” he said. “But also by the kindness and hospitality of this crew.” Mission Commander Peggy Whitson then handed him his astronaut pin, officially making him astronaut number 634.
