It was a proud moment for India in space on 26 June, as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla floated into the International Space Station (ISS) at 4:05 p.m. IST. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft carrying him and three other astronauts docked successfully with the orbiting laboratory.
Shukla is now the first ISRO astronaut to visit the ISS. He will spend 14 days conducting science experiments and leading several outreach activities during the mission. Speaking from the space station, Shukla described the journey as a “wonderful ride” and expressed his happiness at reaching space.
“A Privilege to See Earth from Here”
Addressing the crew, Shukla said it was a privilege to witness Earth from space. He added that nothing could prepare him for how beautiful the view was. Shukla shared how warmly the Expedition-73 crew welcomed him aboard the ISS. He said the crew made him feel like they had opened the doors of their home.
“Whatever expectations I had were surpassed by the view,” he said. “But also by the kindness and hospitality of this crew.” Mission Commander Peggy Whitson then handed him his astronaut pin, officially making him astronaut number 634.
Whitson, on her fifth space flight, said leading a crew of rookies was a special experience. “Watching rookies go through this reminds me of my first time,” she said. “It is special to relive this journey through them.”
Shukla thanked the team and said the coming 14 days would be amazing. He looked forward to working together on science and research with his fellow astronauts.
A Message for India from Space
Soon after, Shukla spoke directly to the people of India in Hindi. He thanked everyone for their support and blessings that helped him reach the ISS safely. He admitted that standing in space wasn’t as easy as it looked.
“My head feels a bit heavy, but it’s normal,” he said. “These are small things. I will get used to it soon.” He called this mission the first step in India’s larger space journey.
Shukla promised regular updates from space over the next 14 days. He encouraged everyone in India to stay involved and excited about the mission.
Holding the tricolour on his shoulder, Shukla said, “I believe all of you are with me in this moment. The next 14 days will be very exciting.” He ended his message with “Jai Hind, Jai Bharat”.
