Scientists discovered coastal sea snakes using unexpected diving tactics. They dive in two styles during normal foraging behaviour. One includes a strange wiggle unseen in other marine reptiles. This behaviour helps them hunt and save energy underwater.

Two species show U-shaped and S-shaped dive patterns. U-dives involve long bottom searches on the seafloor. S-dives include brief searches and higher upward glides. Some snakes glide six metres above sandy seabeds. Their movement appears efficient and coordinated underwater.
