A major survey reveals a stark divide. Extensive survey of Eastern tropical Pacific finds remote protected areas harbor some of the highest concentrations of sharks. It covers seven major marine protected areas.

The researchers found remote islands host exceptionally high shark populations. Areas such as Galápagos, Malpelo, Clipperton and Revillagigedo showed dense populations of sharks.

Coastal MPAs showed worrying depletion of sharks and large predators. The study highlights remoteness and strict protection sustain healthy populations. This survey is the first comprehensive assessment across seven MPAs.
