Skywatchers are in for a treat tonight as Earth’s shadow creates a stunning Blood Moon. A total lunar eclipse on September 7–8 will turn the Moon crimson, visible across much of the world.
Where can the eclipse be seen live online?
The Virtual Telescope Project will stream the eclipse from Italy. Its robotic telescopes in Manciano will track the Moon’s rise. The free YouTube stream begins at 5.45 pm GMT. Viewers will see the Moon turn red during totality. The stream will also show Earth’s shadow leaving the lunar surface.
Time and Date will also broadcast the event worldwide. The stream will start earlier at 4 pm GMT. Hosts Anne Buckle and Graham Jones will guide the coverage. CEO Steffen Thorsen and his team will report from Cyprus. Their stream will include penumbral, umbral, and total phases. Viewers can follow each stage without worrying about cloudy skies.
How many people will witness the eclipse in person?
Over seven billion people are expected to view totality. Some regions will only see partial stages of the eclipse. The United States will miss the event completely this time. For those unable to watch outdoors, online streams are ideal.
A lunar eclipse happens when Earth passes between Moon and Sun. Earth’s shadow covers the Moon fully during totality. The crimson glow appears because Earth’s atmosphere scatters blue light. Only red wavelengths reach the Moon, producing the blood-red effect.
