US President Donald Trump made a lighthearted remark when asked about the NASA astronauts still in space. He assured them, “We love you, and we’re coming to get you.” Trump criticised the Biden administration, suggesting the astronauts had been left there too long.
He also made a comment about NASA astronaut Sunita Williams' hair. “I see the woman with the wild hair. She’s got a good, solid head of hair,” Trump said. Discussing their return, he quipped, “I hope they like each other up there. Maybe they’ll fall in love.”
Trump claimed he had given Musk approval to retrieve the astronauts. “I asked Elon if he could get them. He said yes. He’s preparing his Starship now,” Trump stated. He even joked about joining the mission himself.
Trump’s comments came as SpaceX suffered another setback. The upper stage of its Starship rocket exploded mid-air after launch. However, the booster was successfully caught in the test.
A live feed showed the upper stage tumbling before losing signal. Footage online captured debris falling over the Bahamas. “We lost contact with the ship,” SpaceX spokesman Dan Huot confirmed. He compared it to a similar failure in January.
This was Starship’s eighth orbital test. The rocket lifted off from Boca Chica, Texas, at 5:30 p.m. (2330 GMT). Earlier launch attempts on Monday and Wednesday had been scrubbed.
