Beaver Moon 2024 Date and Time: The fourth and final supermoon of 2024 will reach full illumination on Friday, November 15, offering a stunning celestial display. For viewers in India and much of Asia, the best time to catch this supermoon, known as the "Beaver Moon," will be as it rises on the evening of November 16.
In many cultures, November’s full moon holds special significance. Known in North America as the Beaver Moon, it symbolizes the time when beavers build their winter dams. It’s also called the Frost Moon or Snow Moon, signaling the approach of winter. Indigenous groups like the Anishinaabeg refer to it as "Baashkaakodin Giizis," meaning the "Freezing Moon."
This Beaver Moon is the last of four supermoons in 2024, following the Sturgeon Moon in August, the Harvest Moon in September, and October's Hunter’s Moon. A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides closely with perigee, the moon’s closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This proximity makes the moon appear larger and brighter than usual.
The Beaver Moon reaches peak fullness at 2:58 a.m. IST on November 16 (21:28 UTC on November 15). However, the best viewing in India will be at moonrise on Saturday, November 16, around 20 to 30 minutes after sunset. Observing the supermoon at this time can make it appear especially large and luminous as it rises against the twilight sky.
Viewers may also spot the Pleiades star cluster, or "Seven Sisters," near the full moon. On November 15, Pleiades will be located to the lower left of the moon, shifting to its upper right on November 16.
No special equipment is required to enjoy this supermoon, though binoculars or a telescope can enhance details on the lunar surface, especially around moonrise. As the moon rises higher, its glare intensifies, making it more challenging to view directly.
The last full moon of 2024, known as the Cold Moon, is set to rise on December 15, closing out a year of remarkable celestial events.
