Why Hariyali Teej is Celebrated?
Hariyali Teej marks the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, symbolizing devotion, love, and marital bliss. Married women observe fasts, pray for their husband’s longevity, and seek blessings for a happy married life. This festival is one of the three major Teej celebrations of the monsoon season, alongside Kajari Teej and Hartalika Teej. It usually falls two days before Nag Panchami, making it significant during the sacred month of Sawan.
Traditional Rituals and Celebrations
On this day, married women visit their parents' homes, wear green sarees and bangles symbolizing prosperity, and adorn themselves with henna (mehendi). Swings decorated with flowers are prepared, and women sing traditional Teej songs while enjoying the monsoon ambiance.
The festival is also known as Sindhara Teej, as families send Sindhara (gifts) — including homemade sweets, Ghewar, henna, bangles, and clothes — to married daughters and their in-laws. Also called Chhoti Teej and Shravana Teej, it is distinct from Kajari Teej (Badi Teej), which is celebrated 15 days later. While festivals like Akha Teej (Akshaya Tritiya) and Gangaur Tritiya are also observed, they fall outside this series of Sawan and Bhadrapada Teej celebrations.
