Who is Goddess Chhinnamasta?

Goddess Chhinnamasta is the sixth Mahavidya among the ten Mahavidyas of Hindu tradition. She is a part of the Kali Kula, the lineage of fierce goddesses, and is also known by the name Prachanda Chandika. Chhinnamasta, meaning “She who is severed at the head,” represents self-sacrifice, courage, and the transcendence of ego.

Her form is striking—holding her own severed head in one hand while blood streams from her neck to feed her attendants. This terrifying image carries deep symbolic meaning, reflecting the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, as well as the destruction of ego and desire.

Chhinnamasta is considered the Shakti (energy) of Lord Shiva in his headless form, known as Kabandha Shiva. She rules during times when destruction outweighs creation, balancing the cosmic cycle alongside Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, who governs creation.
