External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Wednesday, marking Rubio's first bilateral engagement since taking office under the Trump 2.0 administration. The discussions were held on the sidelines of the Quad meeting on January 22.
Jaishankar shared his impressions of the meeting, saying that the Trump administration had shown a clear interest in involving India in significant global initiatives. "It was very clear that the Trump administration was keen to have India present at the inaugural itself. They're prioritising the bilateral relationship," Jaishankar noted. He added that the first Trump administration had played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for the US-India relationship, with President Trump and Prime Minister Modi launching key initiatives that continue to shape the evolving ties between the two nations.
Reflecting on the discussions, Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the willingness of both administrations to build upon the strong foundation laid by the previous Trump administration. "There is a strong sense that the current administration would reciprocate our desire to take the Quad further and intensify its activities," he said, noting the importance of furthering cooperation in the Quad framework.
The meeting also touched upon various areas of cooperation, including defence, security, skills and education, and technology. Dr. Jaishankar noted that while there were new opportunities for collaboration, there was also a focus on improving existing processes. "There was an openness to look at a lot of these issues and to explore new avenues for cooperation. Both countries have leaders who are focused on effective and efficient governance, and that mindset is reflected in the relationship," he remarked.
The issue of irregular migration was also discussed, with a focus on enhancing mobility between the two countries. Jaishankar highlighted that discussions covered a wide range of issues, but the overall tone was one of openness and willingness to address shared challenges.
