US President Donald Trump declared February 9 as "Gulf of America Day" as he signed a proclamation after a recent executive order by him to rename the Gulf of Mexico. He signed the proclamation on Sunday while flying over the Gulf on his way from from Mar-a-Lago in Florida to attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

"We are flying right over it right now," Trump said, aboard Air Force One.

"Today, I am making my first visit to the Gulf of America since its renaming. As my administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America," he said in the proclamation published on the White House website.

Just as the US President was signing the order, Air Force One's captain told passengers to look outside the window and view the "Gulf of America" under its new name for the first time in history.
