According BP Yadav, Director, Met Dept there has been considerable improvement in the monsoon situation and the overall deficiency now stands at 11 percent.
The rainfall has been moderate in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Marathwarda, he adds in an interview to CNBC-TV1’s Latha Venkatesh and Sonia Shenoy.
However, the rainfall deficiency is still very high in North West India; it’s over 40 percent in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, says Yadav.
Yadav says, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) rules out heavy rainfall for the next five days in Jammu and Kashmir but Maharashtra and Gujarat west is likely to receive heavy rainfall.
Below is the transcript of BP Yadav\\'s interview with Latha Venkatesh and Sonia Shenoy on CNBC-TV18.Sonia: Can you tell us what the status is as of now, how much has the overall deficit reduced and geography wise as well, how have things improved?A: Over the last one week, there has been a considerable improvement in the rainfall scenario over many parts of the country particularly over central and northwest India. The deficiency which was stuck about 18 percent till end of the August has now reduced and it is now 11 percent. So there is now 7 percent improvement in the rainfall scenario over the last one week. The maximum benefitted area is central, eastern, northwest India, of course J&K has got extremely heavy rainfall but otherwise also, the plains like Pujab and Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Maharashtra, Odissa, Chhattisgarh, all these areas have got very good rainfall in addition to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. So geography wise, last one week has been very good except of course J&K where the rainfall has been extremely heavy.
Latha: Can you now tell us what are the deficiencies standing at in the various pockets and more importantly you will now have much more visibility for the end of the season, how do you think the end of the season deficiency will pan out nationally and regionally?A: You talk of rainfall deficiency as of now; still it continues to be high over the plains of northwest India. That means Punjab, Haryana, Western UP; these are the three states or areas where the deficiency is still more than 40 percent in the cumulative rainfall from June 1 to September 7. This is one area where the deficiency is more. Some other areas where there is moderate deficiency is still persisting are Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and some parts of Marathwada. These are the three-four areas otherwise remaining areas the deficiency has improved, they are marginal and in many other areas, it has become normal or some areas even above normal. So only the deficiency worth mentioning is Punjab, Haryana, UP some parts of Marathwada where the deficiency is 40 percent or more.
