Russian President Vladimir Putin sparked intrigue during his annual end-of-year press conference in Moscow on Thursday, naming three deceased world leaders he would have liked to share tea with. Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, ex-French President Jacques Chirac, and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi topped his list.

The conference, combined with the 'Direct Line' Q&A session, drew journalists from across Russia and abroad, alongside over 2 million questions from citizens via calls, texts, and social media. While the session addressed pressing domestic concerns, Putin’s musings on past leaders offered a reflective glimpse into his political worldview.

Putin described Helmut Kohl, who oversaw Germany’s reunification, as “a figure of international scale,” recalling their impactful conversations. “Some of our discussions were interesting. They were useful for me,” he shared.

Jacques Chirac, whom Putin referred to as a “walking encyclopedia,” earned praise for his intellect and strong opinions. “I learned much from him… He was warm in communication and energetic,” Putin added, talking about the French leader’s lasting impression.
