A couple in the United States got the shock of their life when they received a phone bill of $143,000 (approximately Rs 1.2 crore) bill after returning home from a trip to Switzerland, an ABC Action News report said.
Rene Remund and his wife-residents of Florida- visited Switzerland in September 2023 and always notified their cell phone carrier, each time before leaving the country.
Before leaving, Remund visited a T-Mobile store to share his travel plan and was told to not worry about the charges, while travelling outside the United States. "They said you’re covered. Whatever that meant. You're covered," Remund said.
The couple left for Switzerland and travelled from one place to another, without worrying about the charges incurred while sending messages and photos from the country.
After returning home, Remund said he received the phone bill, which he thought was $143 but a few days later he found out that the T-Mobile had charged him $143,000 for using 9.5 GB during the trip.
The man immediately spoke to the mobile store and was informed by a representative that the amount was correct.
"She gets back. 'No, this is a good bill," the representative told Remund. "What do you mean it's a good bill?," Remund asked. "Well, this is what you owe," the representative said, to which Remund said "You’re kidding me?"
The couple took the legal route to challenge the bill and eventually, after media intervention, T-Mobile replied and agreed to credit the man's account with the full amount.
