For 20-year-old Mujahid, life took an unexpected turn when he was tricked into undergoing a forced sex change surgery at a local medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar. The incident, allegedly orchestrated by a man named Omprakash in collaboration with doctors from Begrajpur Medical College in Mansoorpur, has led to widespread outrage and protests organised by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU).
The situation unfolded on June 3 when Mujahid, a resident of Sanjak village, was allegedly deceived by Omprakash. Mujahid claimed that Omprakash had been threatening and harassing him for two years. Under the false pretense of a medical issue, Omprakash took Mujahid to the hospital, where he was administered anesthesia and subjected to a forced sex change surgery, NDTV reported.
Mujahid recounted his experience: "He brought me here, and the next morning I had an operation. When I regained consciousness, I was told that I had been changed from a boy to a girl." Omprakash then informed Mujahid that he would have to live with him, asserting that neither his family nor his community would accept him. Omprakash further threatened to kill Mujahid's father and seize his share of the family land.
"He said, 'I changed you from a man to a woman and now you have to live with me. I have prepared a lawyer and arranged a court marriage for you. Now I will shoot your father and take your land, sell it, and go to Lucknow,'" Mujahid recalled.
In response to this incident, BKU activists, led by farmer leader Shyam Pal, staged a protest at Begrajpur Medical College, demanding swift action against Omprakash and the involved medical personnel. The police have assured the protesters of a comprehensive investigation.
Shyam Pal pointed to a broader issue, alleging that the hospital is part of an organ trafficking racket targeting individuals for involuntary organ harvesting and forced sex changes. "It is very unfortunate. We want this illegal business of selling body parts to be stopped immediately. All those involved, including the hospital management and those who facilitated this crime, should be held accountable and punished," Pal demanded.
Mujahid's father filed a police complaint on June 16, leading to Omprakash's arrest. However, Pal criticised the police for their slow response and called for more stringent action. He also demanded compensation of at least Rs 2 crore for Mujahid, whose life has been irreparably altered by this event.
Senior Muzaffarnagar police officer Ramashish Yadav assured, "All the allegations made by the family and the protestors will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate legal actions will be taken against those found guilty."
In addition to arresting Omprakash, the police are also scrutinising the hospital staff implicated in this case.
