Shaadi.com founder and CEO Anupam Mittal recently opened up about his struggles with anxiety and his experience with panic attacks on the “Ranveer Allahbadia’s Podcast”. He also discussed about the success of “Shark Tank India” season 3 on which he was a judge and investor while talking about the setbacks that he faced in life and what effect they had on him.
According to Mittal, he suffered his first panic attack when he was in the United States during his 20s and in the midst of the Dotcom crisis. “Panic attack ek aisi cheez hai, agar aapne experience nahi kiya to bhagwan chaahe aap kabhi na karo (If you have never experienced a panic attack, I pary to god that you never do),” he said. He had just lost his job at the time.
“A panic attack is the scariest thing I've experienced. You feel like the earth will eat you whole, the walls will crush you, you have difficulty breathing. On the outside, you look calm, but inside, there's a volcano erupting. In that moment, you are prepared to do anything. If someone told you to shoot yourself, you probably would. It's so scary,” he added.
The “Shark Tank India” judge said that he approached a friend who had experienced panic attacks as well, read books and ultimately resolved his situation. The second panic attack that Mittal suffered was in 2008. “When you are a problem solver by nature, panic attacks can make you feel helpless. You feel like a complete failure, useless. If your baseline anxiety levels are high, you can get a panic attack easily,” Mittal told Allahbadia.
Mittal then consulted a professional since the panic attacks had become regular. He started therapy in 2012 and continues to do so. “After reading and speaking to the therapist, I realised every person has a different mental condition. Anxiety is good, it happens when you have a fear of something not working out. It’s normal. It’s not a problem with mental health.”
He said that he understood the difference between panic attacks and anxiety after consulting a therapist. He also mentioned that people who are driven, creative or want to achieve something big in life, generally have a higher level of baseline anxiety.
Concluding, he urged people struggling with anxiety and panic attacks to seek some help. "You can even do it anonymously. There is no shame."
