'Goodbye, my dear lighthouse': Ratan Tata's assistant Shantanu Naidu bids farewell to industrialist

The relationship between Naidu and Tata began in 2014 when Naidu, then a young engineer at Tata Elxsi in Pune, sought to tackle the issue of stray dog fatalities caused by speeding vehicles. Motivated to protect these animals, Naidu designed reflective collars to improve their visibility at night. He sent a letter outlining his initiative to Tata, a noted animal lover.

Tata not only responded but also arranged a meeting, which marked the start of their enduring friendship. Impressed by Naidu’s creativity and compassion, Tata invited him to work alongside him. Naidu later became Tata’s assistant and eventually the General Manager of his office.

Over the years, Naidu gained public recognition, particularly after a video surfaced showing him celebrating Tata’s birthday.

The industrialist forged close relationships with those who shared his values, including Naidu. During his final years, Tata who largely withdrew from public life, was often seen with Naidu by his side.

Their shared love for animals, particularly dogs, was a common thread throughout their friendship. Naidu’s work to protect stray animals had resonated with Tata, and together they worked on several animal welfare initiatives.

Ratan Tata’s death late on Wednesday marked the end of an era. Tata had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital after a sudden decline in his health earlier that week. His passing has left a deep void, not only within the Tata Group but also across India’s industrial landscape.

In a statement, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed the sense of loss felt by the business community. "Ratan Tata shaped not only the Tata Group but the very fabric of the nation," Chandrasekaran said.
