A rare view of Mount Everest from Bihar’s Madhubani district captured the internet’s attention after clear skies made the Himalayan range visible from Jainagar, a small town near the India–Nepal border.
The video, originally shared on X by user Satyam Raj, showed the distant snow-covered peaks faintly visible against the horizon. “View of the majestic Himalayas as seen from Jainagar, Madhubani, Bihar,” Raj wrote in his post, which has since gone viral.
Speaking to HT.com, Raj said the footage was recorded on October 6, 2025 by a friend visiting her relatives in Jainagar. “Her relatives are from Jainagar and she had gone there to visit them," he explained. “Himalayas are visible from that region whenever the weather is clear. It had rained that day which made the visibility even better,” he added.
Several users reacted to the clip, expressing astonishment at the sight of the world’s tallest mountain from so far away. One commenter noted, “Mt Everest is 170 km distance from Jainagar… really fascinating how far it is visible. What you are seeing is the entire width of Nepal.”
Another user observed that the location had significant tourism potential: “If such a place existed in any other state, it would have been proudly marketed and developed as the ‘Everest View Point’, attracting resorts, tourists, and commercial activities all around.”
Others joined in with appreciation, posting labelled images identifying the peaks seen in the video. The clip also prompted discussions about visibility conditions and how rare such sights have become due to increasing air pollution. “Rare sight these days! The Himalayas are always there, but pollution usually hides them,” one user wrote, while another commented, “Wow, thanks for sharing! Had no idea you can see the Himalayas from Bihar?”
Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan weighed in on the thread, noting that sightings of Everest from the region had historical references. “For reference how Mt Everest's height was also observed from Muzaffarpur originally. With other places. For more read ‘The Great Arc’ by John Keay,” he wrote.
Jainagar, located on the banks of the Kamla River, is known for its open plains and clear horizon towards the north. Residents say the mountain range is best visible during certain times of the year — between Vasant Panchami and Holi, and again from Durga Puja to Kartik Purnima — when the air remains crisp and dry.
This was not the first time that residents of Bihar had reported seeing the Himalayan range. During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, locals in several northern districts had witnessed a similar spectacle when air quality improved dramatically. Raj confirmed the same, saying, “Mountains were also clearly visible during the COVID period because of the significantly lower pollution levels.”
Social media users also shared perspective notes to highlight the scale of the mountain. “Mt Everest as seen in this video is 8.8 km tall. That’s really tall. Planes fly around 8 km to 10 km high, and space begins at 100 km,” one user remarked.
