How much would you spend to gorge on a plate of the humble pani puri? Rs 10, 20, 30, 40 or 100? Well, a man spotted the beloved golgappas selling for Rs 333 at Mumbai airport. Kaushik Mukherjee, co-founder and COO of Sugar Cosmetics, was absolutely baffled to see the exorbitant price of one of India’s most favourite snack and shared a post regarding the same.
Mukherjee shared a picture of pani puri, dahi puri and sev puri selling for Rs 333 each at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Each of the dishes had 8 pieces in one plate.
“Real estate is expensive for food stalls at the CSIA Mumbai airport - but I didn’t know THIS expensive,” Mukherjee captioned the post.
Since being shared online, the post has amassed over 55,000 on X. Social media users obviously had a lot to say about Mukherjee’s post and expressed their opinions.
“The value of that last sukhi puri at the end just went up!” one user wrote. Another user commented, “For sure: Can't believe, it is this expensive! I have spent @ max ₹40/- to ₹50/- for 8 pieces of #PaniPuri, that too @ best available #chat points. Not more than that. Let's double it to consider expensive real estate. It shouldn't cross ₹100/-.
"On top of that, #GST! Mostly, I prefer to finish my tea coffee or snacks munching before entering the airport. If you travel with family most of the time, you may end up paying more than the cost of one-way airfare
Why can't airport stalls think of pricing based on footfalls?" a third user remarked.
While food items are generally sold at premium prices at airport due to a plethora of reasons, shelling out Rs 333 for golgappas can be hard to digest for anyone.
Meanwhile, last year, a video showcasing the cost of a simple masala dosa at the Mumbai airport sent social media into a tizzy. The favourite South Indian dish was being sold for Rs 600 with buttermilk. A benne khali dosa was priced at Rs 620 and the cost went even higher if one decided to have filter coffee or lassi with their dosa.
