Nawaz Modi Singhania, the estranged wife of Raymond managing director Gautam Singhania, has come forward with disturbing allegations of assault against the billionaire industrialist. Speaking to Economic Times, Modi detailed a harrowing incident on September 9, claiming that Singhania physically assaulted her and their daughter in a fit of rage. The industrialist has responded, vowing legal action to protect his family's interests.
In a statement, he stated, "In the interest of my two beautiful daughters, I would like to maintain my family's dignity, and I will refrain from offering any comment. Please respect my privacy." Legal sources close to Singhania indicated his intention to seek legal recourse to protect his family's interests, Economic Times reported.
In an interview with India Today, Nawaz Modi, 53, shed light on the troubled dynamics between her and Singhania, her husband of 24 years, disclosing a series of unsettling events that have been brewing since December 2022.
The tipping point, she claims, occurred on September 9, during a heated argument over the use of a bathroom in their expansive residence. Modi alleges that Singhania's rage escalated into physical violence, involving punches, kicks, and assaults on both her and their daughter, resulting in injuries and a hospitalisation in the ICU.
She also went on to explain why she didn’t file an FIR against Singhania, who she has been married to since 1999, after the alleged assault.
“I had not converted it into an FIR, which would have been converted into a DV, (Domestic Violence Report), which would have been a non-bailable offense. You get three years of rigorous imprisonment and hard labour, and the new DV rules are so much more pro-victim than they used to be. It’s much tighter. Why did I do that? Because I am trying to save the unsavable. I was hoping he would do the right thing. Settle us. I am still not pulling the trigger on you, no matter what you have done to us. So both me and my daughter gave our statement that morning,” she told India Today.
The rift between the couple came into public view when videos of Modi being denied entry to a company Diwali party went viral.
Despite not wanting to show up initially at the Raymond Awards for Excellence, Modi went to fulfill what she called her "bare-minimum duty". She claimed that Singhania, allegedly orchestrating the situation from inside, sought to keep Modi out deliberately. She then staged a dharna outside the venue.
After videos from the incident went viral, Singhania later confirmed the separation on social media.
