After US President Donald Trump announced his plans to introduce a $5 million gold card that would offer wealthy foreigners a chance to invest in the country and get citizenship, it received a mixed response from Indians on social media, with most declaring that they weren't interested in the option. Now, the billionaire MD of Max Healthcare has echoed similar sentiments.
Speaking to Forbes recently, Abhay Soi said he was not interested in moving from the country where he built his businesses. “I wouldn’t want to be a citizen of any country other than India anytime—particularly in this century,” he said. Soi is one of seven Indian billionaires polled by the publication, all of whom said they’re not interested in a gold card.
One of the major drawbacks was the tax implication. The US taxes its citizens on their income around the world, regardless of where they live.
Interestingly, Soi has been recognised as one of India’s highest individual taxpayers for the fiscal year 2022-23, after having paid approximately Rs 400 crore in income tax. The income tax department in Mumbai even held an event to facilitate Soi for his significant contribution to nation-building.
"I am honoured to receive this recognition from the income tax department, Mumbai. Paying taxes is not only a legal obligation but also a testament to my commitment to contributing to the growth and development of our country. This honour reflects the importance of every citizen's role in nation building," Times Now quoted the Max Healthcare MD as saying.
A first-generation entrepreneur, Soi is credited with transforming the company and the rapid expansion of the hospital's network. Currently, it is the country's second-largest listed hospital chain by revenue, Forbes reported. Soi also spearheads the philanthropic activities at Max Healthcare and was responsible for providing free treatment to over 3.6 lakh poor patients last financial year, the company stated on its website.
