Indian-origin Tesla director Ashok Elluswamy says 'Elon Musk is critical for Tesla's success'. See note

'Would like to clarify that this is my personal note that I decided to write to explain Elon's importance to Tesla. While the timing is partly in light of the shareholder vote, I truly believe everything I wrote,' Ashok Elluswamy wrote. Tesla shareholders will vote on Musk's $56 billion pay package, and the re-election of directors, including Musk's brother, at their annual meeting scheduled on June 13.

Ashok Elluswamy, the head of Tesla's AI/autopilot software, on Sunday said that Elon Musk is "critical" for the electronic carmaker's success in artificial intelligence (AI). In a note on X, the Indian-origin executive shared that the Tesla boss has been the key driver of AI and autonomy at the company.

Elluswamy was the first person to join the Tesla AI/autopilot team and has worked with the company for about 10 years -- added that Musk has always pushed him and his team to achieve great things, "even when such ideas were seemingly impossible at the time".

"Elon is critical for Tesla's success in AI," Elluswamy wrote. "It is his combination of deep technical understanding, insane perseverance and relentless hard work that have positioned Tesla to be a leader in real-world AI. Elon's technical intuition to make these important decisions way before others see it is unmatched." He added that had it not been for the tech billionaire's ambition, Tesla might have dwindled to become "just another car company".

The statement also comes ahead of Tesla shareholders annual meeting on June 13 where they will vote on Musk's $56 billion pay package, and the re-election of directors, including Musk's brother.
