An Indian employee working on a cruise ship said he had managed to purchase a car valued at Rs 10 lakh entirely through the cash tips he received from passengers. Pravin Joshilkar expressed appreciation to guests from Europe and the United States, noting that their generosity helped him achieve this milestone.
In his Instagram post, Joshilkar stated that he adopted a different approach to managing his earnings, explaining that he did not spend his regular income. Instead, he set aside his salary for long-term use. The image he shared showed him standing next to the newly purchased vehicle in an open area with hills in the distance.
Joshilkar wrote on Instagram: “When you work on a cruise ship you can buy everything with TIPS…..” and followed it with his own practice regarding income management: “SALARY is for future savings bro.”
The text placed over the photo read: “Thanks to all my cruise ship guests (Europe and USA). I bought a Rs 10 Lakh car with your blessings of tips in cash.”
The post quickly went viral and a series of comments from viewers. A user wrote, “Congratulations, bro, keep going.” One user added, “I want to apply for such a job.”
A second incident from Michigan in 2024 highlighted a similarly notable moment involving tipping. A customer left a massive $10,000 tip — approximately Rs 9 lakh — on a bill of $32.43, around Rs 2,000, surprising staff at the restaurant.
The restaurant’s manager, Tim Sweeney, told The Hill that the most substantial tips they usually encountered were around $100, close to Rs 9,000. She said: “Typically, we’ll see every now and then $100 (tips), but not ever anything of this gratitude or magnitude.”
The customer, identified as Mark, later shared the reason for the gesture. According to waitress Paige Mulick, he said the tip was left in memory of a close friend who had died recently. He had travelled to the area for the funeral and wanted to do something meaningful to honour that friend.
