Coronavirus News Highlights: India’s brutal second wave of COVID-19 pandemic is receding and the country is preparing for the possible third coronavirus wave. So far, the country has recorded over 3.18 crore confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 4,27,371 deaths. A total of 3,10,55,861 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far. The Goa government on Sunday extended the ongoing coronavirus-induced curfew in the state till August 16. The curfew was supposed to end on August 9 as per the previous order.In the order issued on Sunday, the state administration said that the curfew will continue to remain in force till 7 am on August 16. A detailed order, however, is awaited. The state government had earlier opened a majority of activities in the state with several curbs in place, but casinos are yet to be opened.The state has been reporting around a hundred COVID-19 cases everyday over the last few days. The number of COVID-19 cases in Goa reached 1,71,883 on Sunday with the addition of 69 cases, while the day also saw one death, which took the toll to 3,160, officials said.

The union territory of Puducherry logged 79fresh coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours pushing the overall tally to 1,21,602, a senior official of the Department of Health said on Sunday.The new cases were identified at the end of the examination of 5,490 samples, Director of Health Department G Sriramulu said.The Puducherry region reported 47 cases while Mahe, an enclave of Puducherry in Kerala registered 20, followed by Karaikal (10) and Yanam (2).The number of active cases stood at 849 with 181 in hospitals and the remaining 668 in home isolation.The Health department Director said 112 patients recovered and were discharged during the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Sunday while the overall recoveries stood at 1,18,953.He said that there were no fatalities during the last 24 hours and the toll stood at 1,800.The department has so far tested 15.42 lakh samples and found 13.18 lakh of them to be negative.The Health Department has so far vaccinated 37,930 healthcare workers and 22,981 frontline workers so far.The department also inoculated 5.26 lakh people belonging to the category of senior citizens or those above 45 years with comorbidities.In all, the department has vaccinated 7.36 lakh people including those who received second dose against the virus, the Health department Director said.

It will take another year to vaccinate all eligible beneficiaries aged above 18 in the national capital at "the present rate of COVID-19 vaccine supply," the health department has told the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).At a DDMA meeting held on Friday, officials of the department gave a presentation on the city government's preparedness for a possible third wave of coronavirus and the status of COVID-19 vaccination.Officials said around 1.5 crore beneficiaries are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination in the national capital and three crore doses are required to fully inoculate them.More than one crore doses have been administered till August 5. More than 76 lakh people, whichis more than 50 percent of the eligible beneficiaries,have got at least one dose. Nearly two croredoses are still needed. The Centre has allocated 16.79 lakh doses to Delhi for August.At the present rate of vaccine supply, it will take till July/August 2022 to complete two-dose vaccination of all 18 years plus beneficiaries, the health department officials told DDMA.They said around 45 lakh doses are required every month to complete the vaccination by December 2021.In view of short supply of vaccine and a large number of beneficiaries due for the second dose, the Delhi Health Department recently issued orders asking district authorities to restrict 20 percent doses of Covishield and 40 percent doses of Covaxin for the first shot.

Arunachal Pradesh's COVID-19 tally rose to 49,916 as 248 more people tested positive for the virus, while three new fatalities pushed the death toll to 240, a senior health department official said here on Sunday.The three new fatalities were reported from Capital Complex Region, Lower Subansiri and Lohit district, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.
The Capital Complex Region recorded the highest number of new cases at 68, followed by Lower Subansiri (42), West Kameng and Lohit at 13 cases each, Upper Subansiri, Lower Siang, Lower Dibang Valley and East Siang at 11 cases each and Upper Siang (10) .Fresh cases each were also reported from Papumpare, Tawang, West Siang, Changlang, East Kameng, Anjaw, Kamle, Shi-Yomi, Leparada, Dibang Valley, Kra Daadi, Namsai, Siang, Tirap and Pakke Kessang districts, the SSO said.
Of the 248 fresh cases, 226 were detected through rapid antigen test, 17 through RT-PCR and five by TrueNat method, the official said, adding, 103 people have symptoms of COVID-19.Arunachal Pradesh currently has 2,873 active COVID-19 cases, while 46,803 patients have recovered from the disease, including 404 people on Saturday, Jampa said.The COVID-19 recovery rate in the state now is 93.76 per cent while the active percentage stands at 5.75 and the positivity rate at 5.54 per cent, the official said.

An undertrial prisoner, who had recently tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Odisha's Ganjam district, escaped from there yesterday, an official said. The 37-year-old inmate was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur on July 31 after he was diagnosed with the disease, Baligida Jail Superintendent SK Soy said. The man was housed at the sub-jail in Kandhamal district on July 7 after he was arrested for allegedly transporting cannabis. At least three police constables and a jail staffer were deputed outside the hospital as they were not allowed to enter the COVID-19 facility, sources said. (PTI)

Maharashtra reported 6,061 new coronavirus cases and 128 fatalities yesterday, which took the state's infection tally to 63,47,820 and death toll to 1,33,845, a health department official said. As many as 9,356 patients were discharged from hospitals, pushing the number of recoveries to 61,39,493. Maharashtra has 71,050 active coronavirus cases now. As many as 4,31,539 people are in home quarantine and 2,761 are in institutional quarantine. The state's case recovery rate is 96.72 percent, while the fatality rate is 2.1 percent. (PTI)

West Bengal reported 15 more COVID-19 deaths yesterday, which took the toll to 18,217, a health department bulletin said. The coronavirus caseload in the state mounted to 15,33,128 as 749 more people tested positive for the infection, it said. At least 791 people were cured of the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 15,04,326. The recovery rate among coronavirus patients in the state currently stands at 98.12 percent. West Bengal now has 10,585 active cases, the bulletin said. (PTI)

Assam's COVID-19 tally soared to 5,73,532 yesterday as 986 more people tested positive for the infection, while 15 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 5,372, a health bulletin said. Kamrup Metropolitan district recorded the highest number of new cases at 159, followed by Barpeta (69) and Nalbari (65). Golaghat district registered the highest number of new cases at three, followed by two deaths each in Biswanath, Jorhat and Nalbari districts, it said. The state now has 10,286 active cases, while 5,56,527 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 1,056 in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said, adding that the recovery rate among the coronavirus patients in the state stands at 97.04 percent.
