A 50-year-old sanitation worker in Chennai chased and thrashed a biker with her broom after he allegedly flashed her, pulling down his zip and exposing himself to her near the Adyar bridge on Monday morning. The incident, captured on a dashboard camera, has sparked calls for stronger safety measures for municipal staff working early hours.
The woman was on duty when a man wearing a helmet stopped his motorcycle in front of her. She approached him to request that he move the vehicle for cleaning. According to her statement, the biker then pulled down his zipper and attempted to expose himself, India Today reported.
“I thought he was like a child, maybe a college student. But when I went closer, he pulled down his zip. I was shocked, but I started thrashing him,” the publication quoted her as saying.
Worker fights back, police investigate
Reacting instantly, the worker hit the man repeatedly with her broomstick, forcing him to flee on his bike. The dashcam footage was handed over to police, who have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are reviewing the video to identify the suspect.
Demand for better protection
The worker revealed that similar incidents have occurred before and urged civic authorities to provide adequate safety for sanitation staff, especially those deployed during early morning hours.
“We need protection. These things keep happening,” she said.
