Fattest cat in the world dies weeks after going to a fat camp. Internet mourns Kroshik

The world’s fattest cat, named Kroshik (Russian for “Crumbs”), has died weeks after being sent to a feline fat camp. Vets said that the 13-year-old feline weighed 17 kg and had cancerous tumours hidden in his extensive layers of flab.

Kroshik had become an internet sensation after the news of his rescue went viral. He was retrieved from the basement of a Russian hospital where he was raised on a diet of scraps, biscuits, and soup — causing him to gain a lot of weight.

He was sent to a special veterinary weight loss center where he lost 3 kg before suddenly developing breathing problems and dying on Saturday, NewsX reported. According to reports, the doctors found damage to his liver, gall bladder, kidneys, and bladder.

In a statement, the cat's heartbroken caretakers said that despite their hard work, “sometimes miracles do not happen.”

“Sometimes even the strongest cats cannot cope. Sometimes even the best doctors, rehabilitation centers and support from people around the world are not able to help,” they said. “Thank you for being and staying with Kroshik until his very last breath. Thank you for being the reason why Kroshik believed in good people.”
