Delhi received heavy rainfall early on Sunday, bringing respite from the scorching heat as temperatures had crossed 45 degrees Celsius. The downpour also flooded several regions of the national capital with videos of submerged cars doing rounds on social media. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the city's primary weather station recorded winds gusting up to 82 kmph and 81.2 mm of rain in six hours—between 11.30 pm and 5.30 am.

A car was seen fully submerged at the infamous Minto bridge near Connaught Place where a man drowned in 2020 after his vehicle got stuck in the waterlogged road. The heavy rain also affected traffic as major junctions of the city were flooded. Vehicles were seen moving at a very slow speed at ITO, Dhaula Kuan, and other areas. Roads were also flooded in Chanakyapuri, one of Delhi’s most upscale areas and home to several foreign embassies.

The sudden change in weather led to a sharp drop in mercury, with the city recording a minimum temperature of 19.8 degrees Celsius, 6.9 notches below the normal. Meanwhile, netizens took to social media to share visuals of the thunderstorm and to comment on the sudden drop in temperature. “Rain, wind, and a sudden chill in Delhi feels more like Shimla than the capital today," X user Mohit Chauhan (@mohitlaws) said.
