Palm oil crisis | Indian importers accelerate buying from Indonesia, Malaysia before export ban, further restrictions begin

Indian traders have accelerated purchases of palm oil from Indonesia ahead of an export ban that kicks in on April 28, while also booking higher volumes at inflated prices from Malaysia, industry officials said.

While crude palm oil has been exempt from the ban and Malaysia has confirmed it will meet the global shortfall, a range of supply-side issues keep Indian traders worried.

Indonesia said April 22 it would restrict the export of palm oil from April 28, shocking policymakers and importers. The country exports 60 percent of global palm oil supplies. Palm oil is the most commonly consumed vegetable oil globally and is used extensively in industrial production.
