Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to chair a high-level security meet around 10 am on Wednesday amid increasing calls from opposition leaders to release visual proof of surgical strikes the Indian Army carried out to dismantle terror infrastructure across the Line of Control.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who returned from a Ladakh tour on Wednesday, was set to brief the Prime Minister at the Cabinet Committee on Security meet, which was expected to be attended by senior ministers as well.The government has so far rejected calls to release videos of the September 29 strike in Pakistan-held territory, carried out a fortnight after 19 Indian soldiers were killed in a militant attack in the Uri army camp in Kashmir.
Less than 48 hours after the government announced the surgical strikes, political unity gave way to bickering when Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, in a video message, said the government must “unmask” Pakistan with visual proof.
The BJP accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of indulging in politics, saying Kejriwal was making headlines in Pakistan for “demanding proof” of the surgical strikes.
“Arvind Kejriwalji, you are in the headlines in Pakistan media. Do you know that? It was most painful and unfortunate that the AAP leader was in Pakistani media headlines today as his remarks gave it a chance to question the Indian Army,” Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said onTuesday.
Rejecting the criticism, Kejriwal accused the BJP of playing politics and asked why was the party was "scared" when all he had done was to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to counter the false propaganda by Pakistan.
Hours later, the Congress was forced to distance itself from its Mumbai unit chief Sanjay Nirupam's remarks and said it has taken serious note of the leader’s statement calling the surgical strike "fake".
Nirupam had tweeted that "every Indian wants surgical strikes against Pakistan but not a fake one to extract just political benefit by BJP. politics over national interest(sic)."
