Unions to stage satyagraha at Maruti plant on June 9

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Wednesday said it will stage a ''satyagraha'' on June 9 outside the entrance of Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant, where the workers are on strike for the last five days.

"We are organising a satyagraha tomorrow at the gate of Maruti's Manesar plant. All representatives of unions of factories in the Gurgaon-Manesar industrial belt will be participating," AITUC Gurgaon District President Suresh Gaur told PTI.
He said the CPI-affiliated trade union is supporting the strike, which continued for fifth day on Wednesday with production losses mounting to about 4,200 units.
Gaur asserted the workers have the right to form more than one union in a factory with minimum required number of members.
"We are supporting them as their demand for forming a union, which will not be under the management control, is genuine," Gaur added.
He further said AITUC representatives along with some MSI workers on Wednesday met Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon and apprised him of the situation.
On June 4, about 2,000 workers struck work from the second shift at the Manesar facility. Production at the plant is completely stopped at present with no signs of immediate breakthrough as both sides are unwilling to soften stands.
The striking workers are demanding the recognition of a new union -- Maruti Suzuki Employees Union (MSEU) -- formed by those working at the Manesar plant, besides retaining contract labourers for the two upcoming new units inside the complex.
