Ahead of the UP assembly elections which is set for the final and seventh phase covering 60 seats spread over 10 districts, Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson, Hindustan Times Group & Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha is of the opinion that the Samajwadi Party will be way ahead of other parties but they may fall short of an absolute majority and would require support.

Q: Which way is the wind blowing, does the Samajwadi Party have its nose in front enough to make a government on its own or would it need the Congress. What are the early signs?A: Difficult to do crystal ball gazing but from all the feedback that one gets from people who have been actually touring around with the various candidates, it definitely seems like the SP would be way ahead of the other parties. But it looks like they may be short of an absolute majority on their own and therefore would require the support. But again, it's all up for grabs, it's all just trying to predict, a four cornered context is virtually impossible for anyone to get right.
So having said that, there does seem to be a huge upsurge of support for Akhilesh Yadav; wherever he goes, there is close to a frenzy in his meetings.
