The government has not yet fixed a date for ministers to review diesel pricing, Oil Minister S. Jaipal Reddy said on Friday, suggesting no immediate increase is on the cards.
Reddy said, "View has to be taken by EGoM (Empowered group of Ministers) in regard to the price of gas. Only EGoM is competent to take a decision." He also informed that his ministry has recommended an increase in tax on diesel vehicles.
The government heavily subsidises diesel prices as the fuel powers much of the economy, especially in rural areas and in transportation.
Decision on the prices of LPG and kerosene have also not been taken, added Reddy. On the issue of Reliance's bid to raise gas prices, the Oil Minister said a final call would be taken only by the gas EGoM. Also watch the accompanying video.
