A Chinese man was ordered to pay his disabled wife $4,200 (30,000 yuan) as compensation by a divorce court in the country after he called her "trash", a South China Morning Post report said.
The court described the man, named Zhao from Sichuan province in southwestern China, as a domestic abuser as he frequently tormented his wife, surnamed Qian.
The couple got married in 2007 and became parents to two children, but their lives turned upside down when Qian suffered a car accident in 2015 which left her disabled and also changed her husband's attitude towards her.
When the man filed for divorce, his wife consented and made a claim for damages. During multiple hearings, the court found out that the man had showed no care or love for his wife who was constantly humiliated by him when she required support and care from his end.
The court felt that Zhao had harmed Qian and also said that his behavior towards her had constituted to psychological abuse and his verbal attacks had totalled up to domestic violence.
As a result, the court decided that Zhao had to pay Qian a compensation for the mental torture caused to her and also marked out that he would be given only 40 per cent of the value of the couple's jointly-owned property.
The story saw a lot of angry reactions from users on local social media.
"Since the beginning of her disability, the man’s purpose has clearly been to divorce her,” one user wrote.
"There was no need to humiliate her. She must have suffered a lot," another user wrote.
This is not the first instance of a court ordering a man to pay a hefty compensation to his wife. In March 2023, a Spanish man was asked to pay a compensation of €204,000 to his ex-wife for for 25 years of unpaid housework.
