Chinese man carries screaming wife out of court, refuses divorce in domestic abuse case

A court in China denied a woman's request for divorce despite allegations of domestic violence and a disturbing scene in which the husband physically carried her out of the courtroom. The incident, which occurred in Sichuan province, has sparked widespread criticism online, with many questioning the judiciary's understanding of domestic abuse.

Chen, a woman married to her husband, Li, for 20 years, had approached the court seeking a divorce, citing years of domestic violence, particularly when Li was intoxicated. According to reports from the Shanghai Morning Post, the couple has three children—two sons and a daughter.

During the court proceedings, Chen described how the relationship had broken down due to her husband's violent tendencies. However, in a controversial ruling, the court refused to grant the divorce, stating that the couple still had a "deep emotional bond" and that reconciliation was possible. The court's decision appeared to be influenced by Li's opposition to the divorce.

In an alarming incident during a second trial, Li became emotionally unstable. He lifted Chen off the courtroom floor and carried her out on his back, prompting her to scream in fear. This dramatic episode, witnessed by court officials and attendees, has further fuelled public concern over Chen's safety.
