Author Vikram Seth has related the unpleasant experience he had with Amazon, saying he was “scammed and stonewalled” by the e-commerce giant.
In a piece published in a national daily and shared by his sister Aradhana Seth on Twitter, the author of A Suitable Boy said he ordered 10 bamboo bookracks from Amazon, paying Rs 9,990 in total.
A few days later, he received a message from Amazon informing him of the OTP he needed to share with the delivery driver upon receiving the bookracks. But when the Amazon driver arrived at his house, Seth was surprised to see he had only one bookrack instead of the 10 he had ordered.
“The driver told me that this often happened, that deliveries were divided,” wrote Seth. He was convinced by the driver to share the OTP and accept the single bookrack, having been told that the remaining nine would be delivered separately.
“I waited for the other nine bookracks. They did not arrive!” wrote Seth.
He then reached out to Amazon customer service, only to be stonewalled at each step. Amazon agents first kept insisting the order had been delivered in full. Pressed to investigate the matter, they agreed to institute an inquiry.
After a week, however, the ‘investigation’ was over and Seth was told that Amazon found his order had been delivered in full.
The author asked to be put in touch with someone senior, and was finally connected with someone from Amazon’s leadership team, according to his account.
The senior team member only reiterated what Seth had been told thus far – that his order had been delivered in full and that Amazon was unable to help him with 9 other bookracks, and nor would it issue a refund.
“What was so moronic and infuriating about this whole process was that they peppered their brazen refusal to accept that they had scammed me or that I had suffered any loss or injury whatsoever with remarks such as ‘I am sorry this happened’ and ‘Nobody should suffer such an instance of disappointment. I totally understand how you must feel. Our utmost priority is to always put a smile on your face’,” related Seth.
He concluded his piece saying the “grossly unfair” incident should serve as a warning to other Amazon customers. The e-commerce giant he blasted for wasting his time, pocketing his money and not delivering the goods he ordered, all while questioning his integrity.
