Shashi Tharoor is quite well-known for speaking fluent English and using words that are not heard very often. So, when an Australian teacher posted a video in which he shared tips on how to speak like the Congress leader, it obviously went viral online. The clip was shared on Instagram by a user named Jay.
“One thing he does is he emphasises the right syllable within the word to give it maximum power,” Jay said while talking about Tharoor’s style of speaking. He then went on to play a video of the politician saying, “So when it comes to pleasure, most youngsters nowadays prefer looking at a screen, their mobile phone or laptop, PlayStation or Nintendo.”
Jay then explained how Tharoor prefers to put emphasis within the word rather than pronouncing the words equally.
“Shashi Tharoor's English accent is beautiful. How does it sound so good? One part is syllable stress - the rhythm of the words,” he wrote in the caption of the post.
In another clip, Jay mentioned that Tharoor’s emphasis on vowels enables him to speak in a beautiful English accent.
He also shared another clip on the same topic and they all went viral with thousands of views. The initial clip clocked in over two million views. Social media users flocked to the comments section with their thoughts.
“I love the way Shashi Tharoor speaks but love the way you teach the nuances of the language. I have been an English Language teacher for years and I have watched many of your videos. Thank you for doing what you are doing right now,” a user wrote.
Another user commented, “Great analysis.”
“Yes, this is something that I have noticed. It's not about the volume, but about the amount of time he holds that syllable. Shashi has a staccato feel in the manner in which he speaks, Native speakers use inflections in addition to the emphasis,” a third user remarked.
A user even pointed out that Tharoor’s English was different because of the choice of his words. “Fact is, the points you mentioned are common when Indians especially North Indians speak English. His English is different because he uses some really different words which are uncommon and hence grabs attention and pushes people to discuss his vocabulary.”
