Apple on Wednesday disputed a Bloomberg report that said that the company gave a green signal to the suppliers to reduce the accuracy of the iPhone X’s facial recognition system to speed output of the phone.
In a mail, published by Engadget, Apple spokesperson said, “Bloomberg's claim that Apple has reduced the accuracy spec for Face ID is completely false and we expect Face ID to be the new gold standard for facial authentication."
“The quality and accuracy of Face ID haven't changed. It continues to be one in a million probability of a random person unlocking your iPhone with Face ID.”
A report by Bloomberg, citing sources close to the situation, said that Apple had silently relaxed some of the technical specifications for its much-publicised Face ID system.
Face ID works on a complex mechanism which uses an infrared camera, flood illuminator and dot projector to create a mathematical model of the user. These components are supplied by hosts of companies and assembled by LG and Sharp. Assembling these components is a very tedious task as even a minor mistake or displacement of few microns can alter the result for the final product.
The precision which the task requires is time-consuming and hence it is delaying the schedule of iPhone X. This prompted the Cupertino-based company which wants to tap the festive season ahead to relax certain specification, according to the allegations.
