The assembly election result in Delhi falls into place like a piece of a puzzle, confirming that India has entered into a phase of 'split-voting'.
How the numbers are stacked
On February 11, AAP retained power in Delhi by securing a massive majority. The party won 62 out of Delhi’s 70 Assembly constituencies. The main challenger, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won the remaining eight seats. Even though BJP won only single-digit seats, its seat and vote share has increased. Last time AAP had won 67, followed by BJP’s three.
The Indian National Congress failed to win a single seat in Delhi for the second consecutive time. This is significant as the party had governed the national capital for three consecutive terms under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit between 1998 and 2013.
Cabinet to be sworn-in
Not just Kejriwal, other Cabinet ministers are also likely to be sworn-in. Reports suggest that there will not be too many changes to the Cabinet. However, who is in the Cabinet and who gets which portfolio remains unclear.
Multi-level security arrangement in place
A multi-level security arrangement will be in place for the oath-taking ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10.00 am and traffic regulations will be in place in the area from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm.
Officials have said that 2,000 to 3,000 personnel from the Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, including the CRPF, are being deployed as part of the security arrangements.
Drones are likely to be used for surveillance.
Kejriwal’s third term as CM
This will be Kejriwal’s third tenure as the chief minister of Delhi. His first term lasted for 49 days between December 2013 and February 2014. His second term was from February 2015 until now.
